Anastasia (13 anni) e Diana (9) sono due sorelle che vivono in un orfanotrofio lettone. Quando vengono a sapere che una famiglia americana è pronta ad adottarle, Diana non vede l'ora di trasferirsi negli Stati Uniti, mentre Anastasia è meno entusiasta all'idea di lasciare la sua casa, sua sorella adulta Yulia e la sua piccola Lily. Quando la loro madre biologica Alla viene rilasciata dalla prigione, Anastasia fa di tutto per stabilire un rapporto con lei, ma Alla è più interessata a partecipare a un programma televisivo e a iniziare una nuova vita. Anastasia deve prendere una decisione cruciale - lasciare sua madre e Yulia e trasferirsi a vivere in America, o rimanere a casa nella speranza di vivere con sua madre. La decisione di Anastasia è resa ancora più difficile quando viene a sapere che il destino di sua sorella dipenderà anche dalla sua scelta, perché la legge stabilisce che due sorelle non possono essere separate.
